Ryder System Solutions Architect in NOVI, Michigan

Position Description

This position provides specialized technical expertise associated with solutions architecture within a data warehousing/business intelligence/analytics environment that is built upon cross-domain, cross-functional and cross-industry experience with broad based technical knowledge. He/She provides technical expertise and hands-on experience with various hardware platforms, operating systems, and software languages. Additionally a broad and deep understanding of databases allows the solutions architect to recommend technology and optionally designed solutions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 (ten) years IT experience with a variety of technologies supporting the full software development life cycle, including analysis, design, development, installation, support and modification

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering/Technology or equivalent years of work experience

  • Technical training is required. Broad knowledge of information technologies and methodologies in mainframe, midrange, and PC computing environments required; in-depth experience in one or more is critical

  • Knowledge of project management techniques and ability to lead a project team is required

  • Strong technical knowledge, with hands-on proven experience designing and implementing systems of diverse computing architecture and environments such as client/server, mainframe, internet, and cloud based applications

  • Advanced analytical, problem solving, and conceptual skills along with strong related technical skills, and a history of successfully operating as part of a team that organizes, plans, and executes large-scale projects or assignments from vision to implementation

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters degree preferred or equivalent work experience

  • Certifications in multiple systems (MicroStrategy, SAS, Cognos, Informatica), network components, software languages and/or database platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata) are highly desired

  • Knowledge of relevant technology, tools, and middleware is critical with experience in data warehousing appliance technology preferred (Netezza, Greenplum)

  • Experience in an industry or in a production/service environment similar to that of the employer highly preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to express complex technical concepts in business terms

  • Able to work independently and solid teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to work on cross-functional project teams and maintain team commitment to tasks

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and analyzes current technology and its ability to support Ryder's strategic direction for the EDW while satisfying client demand

  • Researches software, hardware, and products or services as well as usage options to find the best solution and price to meet the business requirements

  • Assists in the improvement of business processes, testing systems to ensure functionality meets standards & requirements and recommends new products, product uses or upgrades

  • Provides expertise to identify and translate system requirements into software design documentation

  • Responsible for understanding client needs and designing solutions to meet those needs including data and system modeling

  • Responsible for presentations that translate design proposals to the requesting (and/or impacted) client groups to ensure customer expectations are met

  • Translates requirements for internal information technology team members to successfully implement an approved design

  • This may require delegation of tasks to one or more developers (in a matrixed reporting structure environment); at times, Solution Architect may be required to assist with the development

  • As the technical expert, the architect provides guidance and makes decisions on changes required throughout the design process

  • Takes ownership of a particular solution offering

  • Develops and executes a solution strategy and business plan that supports product growth Acts as visionary and strategist for solution product area

  • Helps EDW team define and socialize strategies for product usage

  • In partnership with the support team, develops and maintains vendor relationships within the product

  • Interfaces and coordinates tasks with internal and external technical resources

  • Collaborates with project managers and technical team members to provision estimates, develops overall implementation solution plan, and leads as required to implement installation, customization and integration efforts

  • Identifies business practices and integration issues, participating in the solutioning of alternative recommendations

  • Oversees aspects of project life cycle, from initial kickoff through requirements analysis, design and implementation phases for projects within solution area

  • Writes, or directs the writing of white papers that further insight and thought in the solution area

  • Assists staffing coordinators who define project team requirements for projects in solution area

  • Mentors and guides more junior technical resources

  • Maintains good technical and business relationships to meet expected customer service levels

  • Integrates activities with other departments to facilitate successful implementation and support of project efforts

  • Able to manage multiple, concurrent, and competing demands

  • Experienced with adjusting priorities impacting deadlines
