Ryder System Tax Specialist in MIAMI, Florida

Position Description

The Tax Specialist is responsible for fixed asset compliance review; real estate appeal analysis; and preparation and review of monthly tax accrual. This individual provides audit support and works directly with the Tax Manager and Director on state audits, tax research and requests for audit documentation, in addition to performing tax reconciliations, review and analysis of sales tax accruals and possible refunds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting

  • Four (4) years or more of experience working in tax and accounting environment

  • Four (4) years or more of experience in preparing sales and use returns, analyzing and reconciling general ledger accounts and preparing journal entries to record tax accruals

  • Three (3) years or more of experience in gathering documentation for sales and use tax audits

  • Three (3) years or more of experience with tax systems

  • Strong understanding of sales and use tax rules, including taxability and exemption requirements; property tax knowledge is a plus

  • Strong analytical and technical research skills

  • Ability to research tax requirements in all state and local jurisdictions

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills

  • Reliable self-starter with strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, and Access

Responsibilities

  • Research technical sales and use tax and exemption requirements various taxing jurisdictions and respond to questions from customers, vendors and the field resolve sales and use tax issues; contact taxing jurisdictions to resolve sales tax related billing issues

  • Work with customers to ensure proper coding in Ryder systems so correct sales tax rules are applied to customer transactions

  • Maintain customer and vendor sales tax exemption certificate database; update customer exemptions annually, validate vendor exemptions; distribute exemption certificates to vendors and work with vendors to resolve exemption issues

  • Review, approve, enter and track credit memo requests

  • Reconcile use tax variances, download and analyze transaction reports to identify variances and tax savings opportunities

  • Compile documentation for audit defense and work directly with the Tax Manager and Director on audits and tax research

  • Assist other sales and use tax personnel to provide data to outside consultants for monthly compliance

  • Assist other sales and use tax personnel with monthly tax accruals; review and correct the accruals prepared by the Tax Associate

  • Process tax payments

  • Support all areas in the Operating Tax department

  • Perform other duties as assigned
