Summary

The Technician III must be capable of performing the majority of required maintenance and service on Ryder vehicles with minimal support from others. Works with the assistance of a T4, TIC, SS or SM when performing highly technical or intricate diagnostic type repairs. Task assignments are directed by shop management to encourage skill development in a productive manner. The Technician III works under general supervision of the designated Shop Supervisor or Service Manager. Exercises some judgment and discretion in resolving issues or making repairs.

Essential Functions

  • PERFORMS VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR DUTIES INCLUDING:Performs standard vehicle maintenancePerforms preventive maintenanceDiagnoses complex mechanical and electronic problems utilizing diagnostic computer when applicableCompletes complex and detailed mechanical inspections & repairs with minimal supervisionReplaces defective components as instructedWorks unsupervised on most tasks

  • Utilizes key functions of Shop Management System and electronic documentation available

  • ACTS AS MENTOR FOR TECH 1 AND TECH 2 LEVELSDemonstrate the ability to access and use internal and external maintenance documentsPerforms facility maintenance duties

  • Interacts with customers/drivers to properly determine nature of complaint once assigned a taskWorks in accordance with all federal/ provincial and corporate compliance guidelines (i.e., safety, DOT, MOT)

  • TIRE AND WHEEL MAINTENANCE: Tire & Wheel safety trained within 90 days (TW220)Repair and replace tire and wheel assembliesPerform nail hole repairsVerify, diagnose and repair tire related ride quality complaints

  • PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE: PM trained and qualified within 90 days (PM230 & PM298)Mentor T1 & T2s in complete and efficient PMsConduct Quality Inspections on PMs

  • BRAKES-AIR: Brake Air trained and qualified within 90 days (BA220 & BA298)Measure lining thicknessAdjust BrakesPerform air brake sections of P.M.Perform brake overhaulMeasure drums, rotors, cam bushingsReplace S cams and bushings, slack adjusters and shimsReplace foot and relay valves, air dryers, air tanks, air lines, and other similar componentsMust meet federal qualifications of brake mechanic and inspectors (FMCS 396-25)

  • BRAKES-HYDRAULIC BRAKE: Hydraulic trained and qualified within 90 days (BH220 & BH298)* where appropriateMeasure lining thicknessAdjust service brakesAdjust park brakesRepair or replace minor parts such as linesBleed brake systemsPerform brake shoe replacementMeasure rotors and drumsInspect and replace wheel cylinders, master cylinders and boostersMust meet federal qualifications of brake mechanic and inspectors (FMCS 396.25)

  • A/C, HEATER & REFRIGERATION: A/C recycling and recovery certified within 90 days (CF609) & A/C trained and qualified within 180 days (AC220 & AC298)Perform basic system checks such as power to compressor, condenser obstructions, belt tension, etc.Identify refrigerant and oil leaksOperate charging and recovery equipmentAttach manifold gaugesCharge the system according to manufacturer's specificationMeet Federal Refrigeration/AC qualificationsFlush system contaminantsRun OEM performance tests and verify performanceUtilize electrical schematics and Diagnostic procedures to identify correct related problemsDiagnose and repair all systems and related problems

  • CARGO HANDLING/TRANSFER, LIFTGATES:Identify make and modelAdd fluid to bring to proper levelMake adjustments to lift platform and its controlsIdentify basic malfunctionsDiagnose most mechanical and electrical problemsReplace rail cables or cylindersRepair and replace motor and cylinders

  • CHARGING SYSTEMS (electrical): HD electrical trained within 90 days (DR208)Perform charging system diagnostics and repairs

  • CRANKING SYSTEM (electrical)Inspect and test batteriesVisually inspect cables and cranking motorClean the battery cables, connections and starterReplace batteriesCharge and check batteriesReplace or repair defective cablesDiagnose and repair cranking system including replacement of components

  • LIGHTING SYSETM AND ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIESDiagnose, isolate and repair lighting system problems, such as shorted and open circuits

  • STEERING AND NON-DRIVEN AXLES AND ALIGNMENTPerform alignment procedures and adjust as necessaryDiagnose and repair all steering components for wear and/or damageCheck and adjust trailer axle alignmentAdjust wheel bearings

  • SUSPENSION-CHASSIS AND CABdiagnose and repair air leaksDiagnose and repair suspension and chassis components

  • VEHICLE COUPLING SYSTEM (PM)Repair and/or replace 5th wheelsDiagnose and repair vehicle coupling components for wear and/or damage

Qualifications

  • H.S. diploma/GED required General H.S. subjects

  • Vocational or Technical Certification preferred Must have minimum tool requirement

  • Two (2) years or more Experience with mechanical repairs and diagnostics on heavy duty and medium duty equipment required

  • Non Commercial Driver License CLASS E

  • Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) CLASS A

  • State license as required

  • SBTIII trained (SBT220)

  • Complete 2 of the OEM On-line diagnostic scan tool software courses as required by location fleet mi. (predominant OEM of fleet mix)
