Ryder System HR Field Manager in CHICAGO, Illinois

Position Description

This position is the primary Human Resources point of contact and is responsible for a geographic area.

The HR Manager reports to the HR Director for the Central Region and performs human resources and labor relations related duties primarily supporting field based employees located throughout the states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota for Ryder’s Fleet Maintenance Services (FMS) division.

Reporting out of Chicago, this position will carry out strategic responsibilities related to the HR function in some or all of the following functional areas: labor law compliance, employee relations, training/development, talent acquisition, employee engagement, compensation, labor relations, and CBA interpretation.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about improving our leaders’ skill sets in employee engagement across the region, possess a customer centric focus, be able to build and sustain strategic business partnerships, and demonstrate a proven track record of effective engagement with employees across all levels of the organization providing thought leadership to the Central region leadership team.



  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Employee Relations or related field of study

  • 5 (five) or more years direct Human Resources Generalist experience (experience in multi locations, union environment is a plus)

  • 3 (three) or more years Labor Relations experience with grievance procedures and CBA interpretation

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, able to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously while delivering on commitments

  • Outstanding communication skills, specifically in presentation and public speaking skills and a desire to deliver communication and training through various platforms (in-person, web-based, etc.,)

  • Ability to:

  • Convey ideas and recommendations in a clear, compelling and succinct way in written and verbal communications; can facilitate action and commitment across in-person and remote groups of employees

  • Handle confidential information and escalate issues when appropriate

  • Display a high level of work prioritization, time management and customer follow through

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of internal customers

  • Strong team, interpersonal and persuasion skills, enabling individual to establish influential partnerships working across all levels of employees and across organizational lines

  • Experience identifying and resolving complex issues, assumes leadership roles in unfamiliar or ambiguous circumstances - solid sense of accountability, high-quality judgment and sound decision-making

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment, flexible, able to change direction quickly and in leading through both ambiguity and constant change

  • Strong bias for action, ability to independently deliver results while working remotely with limited direction

  • PHR, SPHR or equivalent strongly desired


  • Balance providing counsel/influence/management in both the union/non-union environment

  • Studies, prepares for, and advises on matters pertaining to grievance cases, arbitrations, conciliations, federal and state labor legislation, etc.

  • Provides guidance, coaching, and training to managers and employees in both labor relations and employee relations issues

  • Partner with leaders to identify top talent and succession candidates and support the succession planning process at the business unit level. Partner with leadership on driving a culture that is diverse and inclusive

  • Help drive business success by creating, reviewing and analyzing HR metrics to monitor performance and identify actionable trends

  • Perform proactive employee relations, coaching and counseling in order to support a high performance and dynamic culture

  • Provide HR leadership and expertise to West region leadership on both strategic initiatives and daily tactical issues

  • Partner with recruiting efforts to ensure Workforce Management and Human Capital planning is in place to ensure the proper level of talent throughout the network

  • Support University and Technical school recruitment initiatives to develop a proper talent pipeline

  • Conduct employee investigations as necessary

  • Resolve employee questions or concerns, working to establish credibility and trust with the team as well as navigating ambiguous situations

  • Partner with the HR Director and other business leaders to provide strategic support on key HR initiatives

  • Serves as subject matter expert and contact for employees and management regarding human resources policies, programs and initiatives
