Ryder System Packaging Engineer II in NOVI, Michigan

Position Description:

The Packaging Engineer II will perform a variety of tasks. Aerospace packaging Engineering experience preferred.

The packaging engineer will support the development of packaging kits for an aerospace facility in Phoenix.

Main work responsibilities include:

1) Obtaining the bill of material for the kit

2) Measuring kit components

3) Quality Reviews to determine special part requirements

4) Designing of the Kit

5) Creating and maintaining work instructions

6) Progress meetings

7) Trial Support

NOTE: This position is based out of Novi, MI (Detroit Metro area). Initially, this role will be required to be in Phoenix for the first 8-12 weeks and approximately 80-90% travel will be required thereafter.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in packaging engineering or equivalent degree

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience

  • Able to read and understand the regulations of the customer, AIAG and OSHA standards

  • Mathematics, oral and written communication skills, presentation skills, and the ability to "sell the vision"

  • Lean Six Sigma or project management experience is desirable

  • Knowledge of: CAD, MS Access, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Visio and Tablu

Responsibilities:

  • Identify the material that should be used, cost effectiveness, and protection of the packaging, keeping in mind how the packaging can effect costs/safety

  • Identify the leanest way to use packaging for storing, shipping, handling

  • Standardize packaging throughout the entire network by using the same type of packaging, regardless of the product inside, to allow maximization of space for shipping and storing

  • Communicate with customer, vendor, product supplier, packaging provider and internal (route engineers, LOP, Plant contacts(project stakeholders), multi-tracking and status tracking

  • Identify and analyze costs (costs justification – business case) and present the idea to the customer (selling the vision) for their buy-in

  • Follow-up and validate that the projectis going as expected, and confirm that cost savingsareoccurring as designed

  • Work directly with customer to add, remove, orclarify that specific guidelinesare withinindustry standard

  • Perform a cost analysis and present the findings to the customer, get approval, and communicate with stake holders, perform trials and validations

  • Validation of change

  • Supervise and mentor direct reports
