Position Description:

The Supplier Manager is responsible for strategic management and implementation of a number of enterprise wide Supply Management Programs.


  • The strategies, policies, procedures, and training programs will be created and managed by this position in order to support Ryder's Principles of Business Conduct and to ensure that the implementable savings identified during the sourcing process are realized at the quality and service levels expected.

  • This individual is also responsible for leading continuous improvement efforts within the supply chain.

  • Internal and external relationships, marketing, operation strategies, and reporting will be effectively managed to ensure optimal program savings are realized through compliance and through process improvements both internal and external to Ryder.

  • Supplier-negotiated KPI's and other performance metrics will be used to monitor and control the performance of the supplier/Ryder relationship.

  • Key position parameters are: cost reduction, supplier reduction, administrative effort reduction, speed-to-market, and velocity improvement.

  • These performance measurements will also be communicated to Sr. Management in order to ensure company sponsorship.

  • Opportunities for program enhancement and expansion will be actively pursued.

  • The Supply Management staff will be managed to ensure successful day-to-day and longer-term performance.




  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, finance, supply management, or relevant area of study

  • Master's degree (MBA) preferred

  • Ten (10) years or more of experience in purchasing, supplier management, accounts payable and finance

  • Ability to:

  • Implement new initiatives using strategic concepts that can be deployed to tactical actions

  • Make key decisions with minimal or no supervision

  • Effective presentation, communication, negotiation, and leadership skills are a must in order to influence and persuade


  • Create performance and exception reporting; measure performance against stated objectives and contractual obligations and implement processes to resolve issues with various levels of field and HQ management; assure that audit and control practices are being followed; recommend consequences for non-compliance to Ryder executive management and report all non-compliance occurrences to the appropriate managers

  • Establish a program calendar, designate an evaluation team, and conduct meetings

  • Facilitate problem resolution, communicate program statistics, identify program performance issues, and negotiate contract/pricing details

  • Establish and manage a process for supplier relations and recruitment

  • Determine budget requirements. Perform periodic budget reviews

  • Create performance objectives; supervise daily work activity; and provide timely informal performance reviews

  • Define the implementation tasks; recruit an implementation tea; create an implementation plan and lead the team through all phases of the plan; identify and drive future program changes, enhancements, and innovative uses; and track benchmarks and best practices for programs of similar size and relevant industry

  • Define and document program process requirements and create step by step instructions

  • Develop training formats in accordance with users' needs and geographic locations

  • Work closely with the Strategic Sourcing team to obtain knowledge of sourcing initiatives and to communicate pending and active programs

  • Establish hardware and software requirements; work with internal and external business and IT resources to ensure systems meet Ryder's business requirements

  • Obtain reporting requirements from all internal groups impacted by the Program's process; consolidate requirements and design report creation and distribution process

  • Obtain and maintain knowledge of all company communications methodologies; submit marketing materials, program policies and processes utilizing all applicable formats, i.e. RIDE, Knowledge center, and newsletters

  • Create process to ensure cross-functional teamwork for all internal groups impacted by the Program's process

  • Perform other duties as assigned
